Guitar practice routine for beginners

We all have certain objectives in our life. Some want to get a good job, some want to do well in exams, and some want to do mastery on instruments. Whatever you’re attempting to accomplish, practice is the key. Here a good routine can fuel up your excursion towards achieving the goal. In today’s article, we come with a rough routine that a beginner or intermediate level guitarist can easily follow.

What is a decent guitar practice routine for amateurs?

So, are you looking for a reliable routine to take your skill to the next level? In the next few minutes, you will come to know how you can organise everything to make your “road to learning the guitar ” venture more proficient & quicker.

Step 1: Start with a warm-up session

You may have seen your mentor or favorite guitarist playing complicated solos or riffs without getting any wrinkles on the forehead. This is due to the advanced level guitarist has done the same finger movement thousands of times. That’s why the brain doesn’t see it as a complex form of activity. However, if you want to know about their secret sauce, then they all do some warm-up exercises to develop muscle memory. You can develop your skill like them following the below tips :

  • Always try to start each session by doing a little warm-up as it increases blood flow in the fingers.
  • It will not take you much time. The suggestive duration for this practice is 5-10 minutes; however, you can spend time even less.
  • You can do finger dexterity,1234 exercise variations, wide-stretching exercise, chord finger exercise & much more. If you aren’t aware of the exercises, then you can google them to learn more.
  • Moreover. If you have a guitar mentor, then you can do exercise according to his/her suggestion.

Step 2: Work on learning the music theory

You should keep a portion of your practice session for reading music theory. This is not a must but knowing it will hasten your guitar learning speed. How? You will find it out in the next :

  • If you want to go to a destination, then knowing the roadmap will make your path much easier.  The same thing happens for guitars if you read the music theory.
  • However, you need only 10-15 minutes to bring this action into practice.
  • It will help you to understand the chord progression more deeply. Shortly, you will be able to get how the next few measures of sounds are going to be.
  • You will be able to get a better idea about music as you will have a better knowledge of the composition. This will also let you enjoy music more than ever.

Step 3: Use a metronome to correct rhythm & timing

Before jumping into the main point, think about one thing. When you speak to someone, what do you need the most? It must be your brain &  mouth coordination, am I right?  Well, it is very essential to keep the rhythm & timing in sync while playing the guitar. However, the metronome isn’t the only way to make the timing perfect. Still, if you can manage to have one metronome, then it will be best for you.

Here’s the reason & tips :

  • You need to give only 5-10 minutes here.
  • The main important thing to set the metronome is to know about the beat per minute, albeit it differs from song to song.
  • However, you can set the device at 50 bpm and then increase the rate by 5 beats.
  • After that, you should try to monitor your chord transitioning speed. For example, you can set the bpm at 50, timing at 4/4.
  • Then, you can strummer each chord one time in every four beats. Follow the rules & reduce the beats gradually. For example, after a certain period, you will be able to strum each chord on every beat.
  • A metronome will help you to set your goal & lock into the rhythm of your songs.

Step 4: Practice on chords

As a  beginner, you may not learn or memorize the chords. When you play the guitar, you actually play a group of notes. You should spend a significant amount of time learning this as it may add value to your skill. If you haven’t started yet with any, then we will suggest you start with the open chord first. Then, you can go for the barre chords.

Other facts include:

  • You should spend 20 minutes or more in this section.
  • The more you will work on learning chords, the more you can improvise your song.
  • Your imagination will grow about the fretboard because it sets a roadmap of the guitar neck in your mind.
  • That being told, applied knowledge comes into real shape when you use it. Practicing chords will increase your vocabulary of music. So, it provides you with a better understanding of the rhythm & notes.

Step 5: Work for improving the Scales

Another important practice for every guitar player is working on improving the scales. Because it acts as a  building block for solos, riffs, licks & fills, melodies & more. Besides, if you want to write your song or sing someone else’s song, it will make you a fast learner & writer.

  • You should work on minor & major pentatonic scales, minor & major scales.
  • However, you need to understand your skill level. Depending on that, you should make your schedule.
  • You should emphasize in this factor the similar way an athlete remains serious about his exercise.
  • It’s very important to know your favorite zoner. Like, if you focus on learning the chords, then you will end up knowing lots of chords only. So, you should focus on several things instead of one. However,  It’s up to you.

Step 6: Rehearse songs

If you follow the above strategies, practicing music will be fun for you. You should spend a great portion of your routine in rehearsing songs.

  • There is no time limitation for this part. You can rehearse as much time as you can.
  • As a beginner, you can start with children’s songs (“Twinkle, Blink”), or simple melodies or riffs (“Smoke of Water”).
  • You can take the help online to learn new songs. Initially, you should listen to music slowly, then you can gradually speed up. This will let you know each beat at a deeper level.
  • Take challenges  & try something different each day.
