Guitar Warmup Exercise For Beginners

In this video, I’ll go over a very basic warmup and dexterity exercise for the guitar. This is great for beginners. You can vary up the exercise to your liking and get many different benefits from those variations.

 00:00guys this is justin with just my00:02guitar.com00:03um i’m going to show you how to do the00:06spiderwalk00:07exercise and it’s a good exercise for a00:10warm up00:11and to build up dexterity and speed on00:13the guitar00:14um so i’m going to start on the fifth00:18fret00:18so we’ll go up this is the first fret00:21and then we’ll go up one00:23two three four five00:26and um the spider exercise uses four00:30fingers and so this is finger00:33number one number two number three and00:36number four00:38and so we’ll go in fifth position and00:41fifth positions on the fifth fret so one00:44two three four five00:49and then um we’ll uh00:52we’ll be here and we’ll start on the00:54first string00:56so this is this high e00:58[Music]01:00and uh um what you want to do01:04when you pick with this better exercise01:06a good practice is to do alternate01:08pickings so01:09that would be um down01:13stroke up stroke and then you alternate01:15between that01:17so down up down up down up down up01:22so when you pick the different strings01:24and you move your fingers you just01:25alternate um so the spider exercise01:29goes on the fifth fret and you start01:31with your first finger and you just move01:33up the frets with each individual finger01:36and you go up01:38four frets so one two three four01:41and then you go on to the next string01:43one two01:44three four and then you just repeat that01:48it’s called i think it’s also called a01:50spider walk01:51so one two three four one two three01:54four one two three four one two three01:57four01:57and then you come back up um02:01so i’m on the bottom sixth string02:04and then you go up to the fifth fourth02:07third second first02:11and then you pick it so i’ll show you02:12how it goes so start with the02:14um first string fifth fret and here we02:20go02:23[Music]02:34then02:42[Music]02:47so in that exercise you can count one02:50two02:50three four one two three four02:53you could even practice with with a02:55metronome and02:57increase the beats per minute up higher02:59and higher03:00to get faster um so that03:03pace i went at would be a good pace to03:05go out for03:06a beginner um and03:09um you can do this exercise anywhere on03:12the fretboard03:13um so when you get lower here on the03:17um fretboard you’re actually going to03:20have the frets03:21wider apart and so it’s good to move03:24this exercise up to different areas and03:26your fingers will get used to the03:28different gaps um like i said this will03:30help build up03:31your speed and dexterity03:35um it’s also a good practice to move03:38across the strings and03:39get used to moving your hand um with the03:43across the strings um with the03:47with your other hand so um this exercise03:50can be done anywhere and i’ll show you03:52like on the first fret04:00[Music]04:12um and then you can do it like even up04:15here04:16like let’s just i don’t know the ninth04:20[Music]04:26fret04:30[Music]04:32so i’d recommend starting um at a slower04:36speed and then04:37slowly increase it as you get control04:39and you make less mistakes um04:42and uh this is just a good overall04:45warm-up exercise so i can go even faster04:48if you want04:56[Music]05:00um and if you really wanted to you can05:03keep repeating this variation05:04over and over um and05:08you know do that for like five minutes05:10to get a good warm up in05:27[Music]05:30i made a mistake there um but yeah um05:34the trick is to not go so fast that you05:37start to tense up05:38um you want to stay relaxed i think i05:40got a little tense up there but that’s05:43you know my mistake um and there’s other05:46variations you can do with this at the05:47spider walks so05:49um i could show you a different one uh05:54you can you can isolate the individual05:56fingers to get more control05:58of the fingers um so you could do06:02fingers one and two um and go like this06:07[Music]06:22um you could do fingers two and three06:38um and this combination the pinky06:41and the ring finger are often the06:43weakest uh it is the case for me06:46um so you’ll probably want to go slower06:48and06:49um i could show you that07:05um yeah mine needs some work but07:08yeah you can isolate the fingers um i’m07:10just going07:12um on the first string07:16and then going down to the third string07:18and then back up to the second07:20and you just repeat that variation um so07:23you go07:24and then you start on the third string07:26[Music]07:28and then go back to the fourth07:31and then go back to the third so it’s07:33just like a permutation07:34[Music]07:41oh sorry07:46[Music]07:52um so you guys that’s the spiderwalk and07:55i hope this video helped and if you have07:57any questions let me know
